Worker dead in Hwy. 3 bypass crash
Brian Daniel, 55, of St. Thomas was struck and killed while directing traffic near the Burwell Road bridge on the Highway 3 bypass in northeast St. Thomas at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2.
The driver of the pickup truck that struck Mr. Daniel, a 45-year-old Malahide man, was later charged with dangerous driving causing death.
The accused remained in custody until a bail hearing on Thursday, July 3.
Mr. Daniel was directing traffic at a construction site on the Highway #3 Bypass and Burwell Road overpass when he was struck and killed by a passing motorist.
Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police Constable Troy Carlson said Mr. Daniel was employed by FACCA Inc. Construction and was directing traffic around a boom lift that was being used to work on the Burwell Road overpass bridge and was obstructing the westbound lane of the Highway 3 bypass.
Mr. Daniel was just east of the overpass bridge when he was struck by the pickup which was travelling west.
Mr. Danial was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup and a 32-year-old male passenger, also from Aylmer, were not injured.
Elgin OPP with the assistance of OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators continued to investigate the cause of the crash.
The Ministry of Labour was also on scene conducting their investigation.
Const. Carlson said the Highway 3 bypass between Centennial until about 5 p.m. that day for the investigation.
