Port Bruce monument face-lift celebrated
Malaide Mayor Dave Mennill, left, long-time Port Bruce resident and volunteer Calvin Grissom and Port Bruce Ratepayers Association Chairman John Blankenship cut the ceremonial ribbon during a celebration of the completion of the welcome sign and monument refurbishment in the parkette at the entrance of the lakeside hamlet off of Imperial Road on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4. About 40 volunteers, donors and ratepayer association members attended the event and were invited for refreshments afterwards at the North Erie Marina clubhouse. The work included the installation of a new wooden ramp, new metal hand railings, and essentially renovating and improving most of the components of the monument and welcome sign. In addition, the names of deceased loved ones being remembered by family members and friends are now engraved in granite instead of being printed on paper and covered in plastic. The project took the members of the ratepayers association well over two years to complete with countless volunteer hours and generous donations from Aylmer area businesses. The monument is now safer and more accessible for local residents and tourists to visit and enjoy.
