Lots of support shown at Wheels for Kevin
Local Christian singer/songwriter Derrick Drover was one of several musicians who performed at the Wheels for Kevin fundraising event at the farm of Mark and Josepha Taylor south of Belmont on Saturday, Sept. 17. The event, sponsored by the Belmont Lions Club, raised money to help buy a wheelchair van for Kevin Smith, the son of Gerald and Elsie Smith of Belmont. Kevin was severely injured in a single-vehicle crash involving him and two other men in their early 20s just east of Belmont on Thursday, May 26. As a result of his injuries, Kevin has lost the use of his legs and he continues to undergo physiotherapy with the goal of someday walking again. Wheels for Kevin, held in a large barn, included live music, live and silent auctions of a total of over 100 donated items, a cash bar and food. The inside of the barn was a sea of orange with many attendees and all of the organizers and volunteers wearing bright orange Wheels for Kevin T-shirts and hundreds of balloons.
