Martin Verkaart
Verkaart, Martin May 26, 1934 –April 9, 2020 It is with great sadness the family of Martin Verkaart, fondly known as Papa, announces his passing on Thursday, April 9, 2020 in his 86th year at home with his family by his side. Papa enjoyed life with Thea for 64 wonderful years. From that marriage came two beautiful daughters; Barb (Steve) and Monique (Norm). We had the best life ever together. Family was Papa’s life. His grandchildren meant the world to him; Mandi (Heath), Drew, Allie (Curtis) and Jonathan (Morwyn). They could always wrap him up with their little fingers. If they called him for anything, he would come anytime of the day or night, in the van with the polka music on. Then came the great grandchildren; Ava, Annabella, Ella and Sadie. Now every rule was broken. What a treasure they were to him. Playing card games, basketball, you name it he would do it with a smile on his face. Papa truly will be missed by all of our family members and friends and especially his brother Piet and family in Holland, his buddy Heath and dear friend Gerry. Papa had many favourite hobbies and they always included his family. Explaining in great detail how to get from your home to any destination, he certainly loved to drive. If you needed something fixed or you had a home project, just call him, he would likely come over to help you and even explain how to do it. He always wore his cameras around his neck ready to capture all the fantastic times we’ve had and the places we have gone. He also really enjoyed the Seniors Centre in St. Thomas with Thea and had the opportunity to meet some wonderful friends at Tai Chi Class. Papa was truly a kid with the biggest heart possible and we will all miss him greatly. A special thank you to VON of Middlesex-Elgin who were absolutely amazing with all their calm instructions, caring and compassion. Jennifer, Jessica, Derek, Cody and Helen, your presence helped us when we needed it most. Also, thank you to Dr Anusha Perera for the home visit and your kindness. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to VON Elgin-St. Thomas.
