Suspicious fire at Plank/Calton

A fire at a demolished mobile home located on the southwest corner of Plank Road and Calton Line that occurred Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1 has been called suspicious in nature by Bayham Fire Chief Randy White.

A total of 20 Bayham volunteer firefighters from both stations in Straffordville and Port Burwell along with five fire trucks responded to the fire at 4:42 p.m. with the first truck arriving on scene 10 minutes later, Chief White said.

The derelict mobile home and its contents at 7491 Plank Road had previously been knocked down by heavy equipment in June.

Chief White said heavy equipment from the Bayham public works department had to be brought in to help gain access to the pile of debris for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters left the scene at 6:43 p.m.

Chief White said the fire started at “the end of the pile” and termed the cause as “unknown but suspicious.”
