Breakwater opens in Port Stanley
Central Elgin Mayor David Marr, middle, along with his wife Sandy, left, and Joan Sutherland gathered at the end of the newly refurbished breakwater at Port Stanley harbour that local residents and dignitaries celebrated the grand reopening of on Saturday morning, Sept. 5. Mrs. Sutherland’s late husband Orton was the last lighthouse keeper in Port Stanley before the structure became automated in 1979. Residents and visitors can now stroll along the breakwater but bicycles, skateboards, swimming and fishing are all prohibited. The blue fencing surrounding the east side of the breakwater will remain until Hofhuis Park is complete on that side of the pier, hopefully sometime in March 2016.
