Market Square is a road allowance

Port Burwell’s Market Square is, as it turns out, an oversized municipal road allowance, but that didn’t stop Elgin County councillors on Tuesday, Nov. 25, from unanimously approving a Bayham official plan amendment to change the zoning on the village’ former fire hall in one corner of the square to residential.

That could eventually allow it to be sold for redevelopment as a private residence.

But first, Bayham council must go through a process to “close up and stop” the road allowance, declare it surplus and sell it, and some residents instead want to preserve the square as a public place.
