Aylmer Express debate packs Old Town Hall

Aylmer Express President and PuAE debateblisher John Hueston, left, moderated a federal election all-candidates meeting at Aylmer Old Town Hall Theatre on Monday evening, Sept. 28. The gallery was packed full of local residents who listened to the candidates vying to become the next member of parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London answer questions posed to them from the floor. Five of the six candidates running in the Monday, Oct. 19 federal election attended: Liberal Lori Baldwin-Sands, second from left, Bronagh Morgan of the Green Party, Michael Hopkins of the Christian Heritage Party (standing), New Democrat Fred Sinclair and Conservative Karen Vecchio. The questions ran the gamut from health care to door-to-door mail delivery to support for agriculture and supply management and to even more controversial topics such as assisted suicide and abortion.

Did anyone else notice that Ms. Vecchio constantly was looking in the audience for approval from Joe Preston on the issues; as to her support for or against? I understand Joe didn’t have time to run himself but had time to be her campaign manager. Hmmm! is Joe still her boss?

  • Joan Chandler

Mystery solved! We were up on the balcony and couldn’t see who it was that she kept looking to for help.

  • Bronagh Morgan

I very much appreciated the opportunity to address the audience in Aylmer last Monday… and am looking forward to another lively debate tomorrow in St. Thomas. It is a wonderful thing that the Aylmer Express is doing to help voters get to know the candidates, and have their voices heard and their issues addressed in this election. Thanks to the organizers and all the passionate citizens who attended. You are excellent teachers, and I do love to learn!
