Spitfires win home opener
Aylmer Jr. C Spitfires goalie Michael Mommersteeg could only watch as the puck trickled behind him during his team’s home opener of the season at East Elgin Community Complex on Saturday, Sept. 20. A defenseman teammate of Mommersteeg’s dived in an attempt to clear the puck away but he and a North Middlesex forward ended up dragging the puck into the net with them. The play resulted in a 2-1 lead for North Middlesex just after the midway point of the first period. The Spitfires eventually won the game 5-3. Scoring for the Spitfires were Ryan Van Roestel, Trevor Stewart, Jesiah Sweetland with two and Cody Underhill. Aylmer outshot North Middlesex 48-35. The Spitfires started the regular season on the road at Thamesford the night before and lost 3-2. Aylmer next hosts Dorchester on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. and travels to Port Stanley for a 12:30 p.m. puck drop the next afternoon.
