Full lanes for Big Bro/Big Sis bowling at Cy’s
All eight lanes were full during the Bowl for Kids fundraising event for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of St. Thomas-Elgin at Cy’s Bowling Lanes and Lounge in Aylmer on Saturday afternoon, March 7. In its fifth year, organizers of Bowl for Kids aimed to raise $6,000 or more that day, $1,000 more than the year before. About 40 bowlers participated, many of whom were dressed in funky fashions, glasses and hair as this year’s theme was the 1970s (this year marks the 45th anniversary of the founding of the St. Thomas-Elgin child mentoring agency). The waiting list to match boys and girls with volunteer adult mentors is 22 which is a little less than usual but organizers said the need was still great with families seeking help. Volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters are expected to spend two to three hours a week with their matched child to engage in fun activities the adult already enjoys doing like fishing, playing sports or visiting a park.
