Protesters get Straffordville hall sale deferred
About 50 local residents gathered outside the municipal office in Straffordville before the Thursday, Oct. 1 Bayham council meeting to show their opposition of the sale of nearby Community Centre to Straffordville Evangelical Mennonite Church. A “citizens group” had collected 577 signatures on a petition stating they opposed the sale of the hall and one of their representatives presented the document to Bayham staff during the council meeting. Councillors later in the meeting in a three to two recorded vote decided to defer passing a bylaw approving the sale of the hall to the church for $248,000. The citizens group now has until the Thursday, Nov. 5 council meeting to show progress on their proposal to raise money and find corporate sponsorships to fix the building so it can open to the public again.
