GEORGE ALEXANDER BACKUS
October 5, 1930 – November 26, 2023
George Alexander Backus, of Eden, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side. George was born on October 5, 1930, to Stanley and Mae (Hepburn) Backus. He was born on the family farm where he has resided his entire life.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Helen (Veitch); his loved son Steven and wife Lori (Webber). He was predeceased by loved son John (1987) as well as his sister Grace Davis and brother-in-law Charles Davis. Survived by brother-in-law Bob Soper and sister-in-law Isobel Soper of London. Predeceased by brother-in-law Allan Veitch and his wife Elaine. George was also loved by several nieces and nephews – Brenda McGregor; David Soper (deceased); Sylvia Davis (Bill); Charles Davis (Cheryl); Bob Davis (Cathy); Jamie Veitch (Tracy); Deb Reid; and Doug Veitch (Theresa). Also survived by great nieces and nephews.
George grew 51 crops of tobacco over the years as well as cash crops. He was a mechanic by trade and enjoyed restoring farm equipment. George was and adherent of Eden Baptist Church. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 29th, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221). The Funeral Service for George will be held in Ostrander’s Chapel on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Carl Walters officiating. Cremation will follow with private inurnment at the Eden Cemetery at a later date.
