John McWhinnie

John Raymond McWhinnie, aged 78, of Ottawa, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, with his beloved wife, Vicki, holding his hand.

Born on January 27, 1947, in Tillsonburg, ON, John lived a life full of joy, travel and adventure.  He was a “bon vivant”, full of kindness, integrity, strength and a zest for life.  To know John was to love him.

Throughout his life, John found purpose and joy in first and foremost, spending time with Vicki, hiking, biking, travelling the globe while also enjoying life at home, overlooking his favourite spot, Britannia Bay.

Above all, he cherished his family.  He was the loving and devoted husband of Vicki for over 53 years. He was predeceased by his only brother Craig, his wonderful parents, Lena and Mac, his sister-in-law Connie and brother-in-law Archie.  He leaves behind many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

John began his career in Canada’s Public Service in 1971.  His illustrious career started in the Department of Indian Affairs and after spending time in many other organizations, he ended his career as an Assistant Deputy Minister in ESDC.  Following his retirement, he embarked on a second career as an Executive Coach and Mediator.  It was in the second chapter, that he helped shape young minds, help mid- level career individuals and junior executives achieve success as they embarked on increasingly senior positions. “Always make new mistakes” was his constant advice.

His laughter, wisdom and steady presence will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by so many whose lives he touched in such a meaningful way.  He was a loyal and devoted friend to many, a blackjack and darts enthusiast, a fancy car aficionado, an author and poet, a gourmand, and the life of every party he attended.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Britannia Yacht Club, 2777 Cassels Street, Ottawa.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Ottawa Humane Society, in John’s memory.

Special thank you to the Civic Campus ICU for the exceptional care and compassion received.

Those who knew John will remember not only what he did, but how he made people feel – respected, supported and loved.  His was a life well lived and a heart well shared.
