Michael Ungar
Ungar, Michael passed away at Metcalfe Gardens on Sunday, May 10, 2026. He was 94 years old. Beloved husband of the late Helga (Beindressler) Ungar (2017). Loving father of the late Michael Eric Ungar (2011), Linda Oswell (Mark Irvine) of Aylmer, Lisa Thompson (Phil) of Seattle, Washington, and Anita Mair (Steven) of Virginia. Dear grandfather of Alexandria Marisco (Myles), Leighton Mair (Lizzy), Spencer Mair (Brenda), Amber Irvine and Craig Irvine (Amber) and great-grandfather of Morrison. Brother of John Ungar (Daima) and brother-in-law of Katalin. Predeceased by his brother George Ungar and sister-in-law Karin. He will be missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Born in Transylvania, Romania on November 14, 1931, son of the late Michael and Katharina (Karsti) Ungar.
Michael immigrated to Canada in 1950 and settled in Aylmer, where he built a life rooted in hard work, community, and family. From 1960 to 1989, he farmed tobacco on Imperial Road, south of town, dedicating many years to the agricultural life that he deeply valued. Later, he moved to a home overlooking Catfish Creek.
Michael took immense pride in his gardens and was especially known for his stunning flowerbeds, which brought joy to many who walked by. Gardening was one of his greatest passions and a reflection of the care and patience he showed throughout his life. Michael was also well known for his homemade wine, crafted in the tradition of his home country. It was a staple at family gatherings and celebrations, where sharing a glass together became a cherished tradition and a reflection of his warm hospitality.
He also valued community involvement and friendships, serving on the executive of the German Canadian Club and maintaining membership with the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons of Canada. A faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Michael’s life was guided by strong values, dedication to others, and a deep appreciation for his heritage and community.
Visitation will be held at the H.A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer on Friday, May 15, 2026 from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Aylmer Cemetery.
