Walter Verstraeten

Walter Gilbert Verstraeten of Aylmer, Ontario, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the St.Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in his 86th year.

Beloved husband of Madeline (Moerman) Verstraeten for 62 years. Father of Mary-anne Kerkhove (Jamie) and Rose Anne Kuiper (Rob). Proud grandfather of Jessica Toth (Bence), Linsey Pecile (Adrian), Rechelle Kuiper, and R.J. Kuiper.

Great-grandfather of Nico Pecile, Arabella Pecile, and Leighton Toth.

Brother-in-law of Mary Kesteloot and Margaret Mezenberg and uncle to several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his infant son Josef, sister Anny Moerman (late Henri), sister-in-law Simone Vandenbilcke (late André and late Prosper), brothers-in-law Roger Moerman (Maria) and Andrew Moerman (late Donna).

Walter was born in Ghent, Belgium, on July 23, 1940, son of the late dear Elza (De Wispelaere) Verstraeten. Also predeceased by his loving in-laws Rene and Emma (Vandecasteele) Moerman. Walter immigrated to Canada in 1955. Walter worked hard to support his family and worked many years for HarDee Farms International. He loved gardening and being outdoors. Every Christmas, Walter enjoyed making lukken cookies with Madeline for their family.

A visitation will be held at H.A. Kebbel Funeral Home, Aylmer, on Monday, June 22, 2026 from 9:30-10:45 AM. The funeral mass will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows R.C. Church, Aylmer, on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Walter will be laid to rest at the Queen of Peace Cemetery, Aylmer. Donations to the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation(ICU or Emergency Department) or the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
