LeRoy Holborn “Hoolie”

In loving memory of LeRoy Holborn (“Hoolie”). It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of LeRoy Holborn, affectionately known as Hoolie by friends. He passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025, at the age of 87, his mind still sharp as a tack.

LeRoy was the beloved partner of Susan Bradley, and a devoted father to Kevin (Wendy), Corey (Paul), and Connie. He was a proud and loving Papa to Melissa, Allison, Tristin, Jazmine, Brandon, Jade, Safire, and Connor, and several great grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Eddie (Marjorie), Carman (Debbie), and Rick (Betty), and will be missed by numerous relatives, extended family members and friends.

LeRoy was born August 1, 1938 at Memorial Hospital in St. Thomas. He lived in Shedden most of his life and attended S.S #9 Southwold School, where his grade 5 teacher noted he was ‘a good student but a trifle saucy’.

LeRoy began his working life as a local farmer, cultivating not only crops but a deep connection to the land and his community. Over time, he built and operated a successful wholesale and retail produce business “Quality Fruit Co.”, supplying many local restaurants. His long days often began with early morning drives to the Toronto Food Terminal, ending with devouring both books and popcorn.  A favourite pastime was coffee at Tim Hortons with friends that he cherished.

Over the decades, LeRoy became an iconic face at several local farmers’ markets, where he worked tirelessly until the age of eighty-five when he was no longer able. His presence there was a testament to his dedication and his work ethic. Generous to a fault, LeRoy would give his last dollar to anyone who needed it.

A true lover of animals, LeRoy had a tender heart for creatures of all shapes and sizes. He couldn’t bear to see an animal in pain and often went out of his way to help them—rescuing turtles from the roadside and even wiring their cracked shells back together with care. His life was filled with the companionship of pets, from his dogs (Snowball and Pete), cats (Misty and Marty) and many guinea pigs —each one doted on and deeply loved.

When asked about his final wishes, LeRoy—never one to shy away from honesty or humour—said, “Put me on a board in a field and people can kiss my ass.”

In honour of his spirit and generosity, and in celebration of the love he gave so freely, the family will host a Celebration of Life on Sunday, September 7, 2025 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Pavilion in Pinafore Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation or Animal Aide of St. Thomas-Elgin in memory of LeRoy, to continue his legacy of compassion for animals.

LeRoy will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Our deepest gratitude and acknowledgement to the Kidney Dialysis Unit nurses at The Children’s Hospital, the dedicated and compassionate nurses on D Zone, as well as the incredibly kind VON drivers and PSWs.
