Dan Whaley

Dan Whaley passed away June 12, 2026 at Atikokan General Hospital. He was 78.
Dan was born October 6, 1947 in St. Thomas, Ontario. From a young age he was interested in anything outdoors, which would eventually lead him to northern Ontario. He loved hunting and fishing, and started in taxidermy when he was sixteen.
After graduating from grade thirteen he went on to Dorset Forestry College in 1967. He began his working career in forest fire control out of Red Lake, Ontario. His expertise quickly became well known across the north, and other fire districts often requested his help. When he later moved over to forest management with the Ontario MNR, he soon developed the same expertise supervising forest management projects. Dan was known to make you smile; he seemed to have an endless supply of delightful stories.
He is survived by his mother, June Whaley (née Danbrook) of St. Thomas, siblings Wendy Hertner of Aylmer, Ontario, Neil Whaley of Deep River, Ontario, and Eric Whaley of St. Thomas.
He was pre-deceased by his father Max Whaley.
A celebration of life and interment will be announced at a later date.
